There are similarities and differences between today's New Zealand government and law and the systems used by ancient Vikings.
law
One of the differences in the legal system is that in ancient Viking times, if a verdict couldn't be reached they could have a duel to first blood or to the death. By comparison, that would not be an option in New Zealand society and it would actually be illegal. Also, in ancient Viking society local chieftains and community members could have a say in the verdict. This is different from modern New Zealand society where judges and juries make decisions by applying the law. But there are similarities as well. The law speakers in Viking society did make decisions based on law and that sounds like our judges. There are similarities in the punishments too. For example, going to jail in New Zealand society is a bit like the Viking punishment of being sent away into the middle of nowhere without their belongings and in danger of being killed. This is like jail where you are away from society in a dangerous place without your belongings.
government
One of the contrasts between government in modern society and in Viking society is that here in New Zealand we as a community elect lawmakers whereas in ancient Viking society they had organisations called Things which made law and were dominated by highly powerful families. This suggested that lawmakers were not elected. Also, in Viking times, they had Kings for small areas and villages. This is different in the sense that we have one main leader for the country but it is similar because we have members of Parliament (MPs) for each area and we also have mayors and councils for cities. When King Fairhair divided the area into mini kingdoms by crowning his family members as kings, lots of people moved to Iceland. In Iceland, they created a kind of government called the Althing which was actually one of the first parliaments in the world. This is similar to New Zealand society today because we also have a parliament.
warfare
One of the main differences in warfare between Viking society and today's society (at least countries like New Zealand and USA) is that back in Viking times they were raiding monasteries etc whereas in modern society we are typically defending although somethings that means the USA is attacking but not to gain or conquer land. Both modern societies and Viking society use boats for warfare. But, nowadays ships are made out of metal and powered by engines and can carry fighter jets but Viking ships were simply made out of wood and were powered by oars and sails.
A similarity in battles is that both in ancient Viking society and today we both fight on foot. Today we also use drones, submarines, battleships/aircraft carriers, fighter jets and tanks, and they were not available to the Vikings. Another difference is that Vikings had wars about small family feuds and silly disagreements but nowadays in modern society we only have wars over national conflicts.
There is a large difference between Viking era weapons and modern weapons. Vikings used manual weapons such as spears and swords which had no firepower. In contrast, in modern society, almost all weapons are explosive or fire bullets of some sort such as fully automatic rifles, rocket launchers, land mines, and bombs.

education
In Ancient Viking times children's education was quite different from education in today's society and in some people's opinion more valuable. One of the main differences is that in Viking society, there were no schools and therefore they had no subjects or any structured lessons or testing like we have today. Instead they learned practical things or physical labours. But, if a Viking family was wealthy enough, they could send their child to a private tutor which was not exactly like learning in today's society but more formal in that respect. Learning from a private tutor in Viking times is different from our schools because all the learning/education is focused on one student which is in the long run, more helpful.
